Last year I built a labyrinth and then later took it down. I was guided recently to put it back up and was in awe of how clear the pattern was that wanted to be there. I didn’t have to look at a drawing or picture or remind myself in any way. I just simply stepped foot on the land and I immediately knew how to rebuild it. This is how strong its energy is and how it perpetuates with or without form.
I was looking at pictures of labyrinths last night and realized that there are ancient carvings in stones of labyrinths that are all shapes and patterns. One pattern in particular, based upon the Chartres labyrinth, has been recreated in many places but really our ancestors have shown us that labyrinths can take many forms.
Each form that a labyrinth takes is a unique energetic imprint of what is already there on that land. As that design is physically created, it serves to activate the energy that was once dormant. The act of walking the labyrinth serves to feed the energy as much as receive from it. It is possible to connect with the energy of the labyrinth even while not walking it.
What I think people miss is that it is not the pattern itself that is significant, but rather the energy that gets activated by creating it into form in that place. This is the reason that I have framed the process of building a labyrinth as birthing a labyrinth. If we allow the energy of the place to show us what is already there, a form emerges that we could not have imagined. It brings forth and amplifies energy that already exists but has lacked the container to bring it forth into creation.
To me, this is a wondrous process that I am just a witness to rather than a creator. There are many places all over the world where truly unique and powerful energy is dormant and is waiting to be unlocked. Reconnecting with that energy is truly a gift and a joy. Probably more important, however, is that reconnecting with these energies/forms/patterns is a key to walking our way back to connection with nature, with the Eatrth and with all the energies that support us each day, sight unseen. These energies, once activated, are sources of creativity, connection, insights, ideas and deeper consciousness. Allowing the process to unfold as a birth allows the energy to build and be a beacon for all who engage with it.
